Social Security
Registration in Social Security is an essential requirement for accessing healthcare and other employment rights.
The Social Security Number (SN) is a unique, lifetime number that identifies you in your dealings with Social Security. It becomes your Affiliation Number (NAF) when you begin an employment relationship.
- Applying for a Social Security Number: this procedure can be completed at the Social Security office where the citizen’s address is located, presenting their passport, and, if available, their Foreigner Identification Number (NIF). If you have a digital certificate, you can access the Social Security Number Assignment service on the Online Office.
- Affiliation to Social Security: after obtaining a number, you must register in the system according to your work activity. Those who are self-employed must register as self-employed, while, in the case of employees, their employer will register them under the corresponding system.
See the relevant information for obtaining a Social Security/Affiliation Number.
The required document for the process is Form TA.1.
If you are going to work...
- As an employee, the company that will be providing the contract must register you with Social Security. This process requires your Social Security Number or, if you have previously worked in Spain, your Social Security Affiliation Number.
- For self-employment, registration must be communicated on the same day as the start of the activity or up to 60 days in advance. If you complete the process after starting work, the registration date will be the first day of the current month, which requires paying the full fee.
The self employed registration process can be completed through the Importass portal of the General Treasury of Social Security, after identifying yourself with a digital certificate or other authorized means.
Individual Health Card (TSI)
It is the document that certifies a person’s right to receive healthcare in the Spanish public health system. This card is personal and non-transferable and allows access to medical services, hospitals, and health centers within the National Health System.
The TSI contains basic information such as the holder’s name, Social Security affiliation Number, and the code of the assigned health center.
To obtain it, you must be registered with Social Security and apply for it at the health service of the corresponding autonomous community.
